John Mills Houston was born near Formosa, Kansas, September 15, 1890. He attended Wichita public schools and St. John's Military Academy in Salina. Houston attended Fairmount College in Wichita, and later enlisted in the armed forces. He served as a noncommissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps in the first World War.
